POTTER FLIES FIRST-CLASS ON PAN AM: Remember a few years back when you’d hear a track on a TV show and spend hours, if not days, trying to figure out what it was? We’ve come a long way, baby, as music has gone from an afterthought to the TV industry to a deeply symbiotic ally. Take ABC’s promos for the new retro series Pan Am, accompanied by a newly recorded rendition of the Sinatra-associated standard “Fly Me to the Moon” by Grace Potter, complete with a chyron’d I.D. True, it erroneously credits Grace Potter & the Nocturnals rather than just Grace, but they’re working on correcting that, according to Hollywood Records. Says Dominic Griffin, the label’s VP of Music Licensing: "We knew Grace Potter had fans at ABC. She had already written an original Christmas song called ‘Naughty, Naughty Children’ for their upcoming Christmas special Prep & Landing 2. So when we heard about Pan Am, we pitched the idea of Grace doing a contemporary version of a song from the period in which the show takes place. We collaborated with ABC on the song choice and Grace knocked it out of the park. We sent the cut to ABC. They loved it, and immediately cut it into on-air promos." Speaking of the band, we hear they’ll be hooking up with renowned producer/engineer Jim Scott (Wilco, Tom Petty) for their next album in what appears to be a marriage made in heaven. (9/23a)
