The Paradox of Madonna

MADGE WATCH: There was plenty of differing opinions on Madonna’s by-all-accounts rather tame Super Bowl halftime performance, whose flash point seemed to be the middle finger of M.I.A., which happened so furtively you could have missed it. Much of the speculation surrounded whether Madge was singing live or not, with former L.A. Times music critic @annkpowers tweeting, “Hey She is SINGING,” while others claim the mic wasn’t live until the closing “Like a Prayer.” Twitter response reportedly ran 2-1 positively to the Material Gal’s turn, though individual responses varied widely. @Perezhilton tweeted: “Wow. That ‘Like a Prayer’ finale was one of the best things #Madonna has EVER done! Soooo epic!!” On the other end of the spectrum, @piersmorgan was not as sanguine: "If someone did this on America's Got Talent, they'd be laughed (and buzzed) off stage. Truly diabolical. #Superbowl." A proto-feminist took issue with Madonna having her special guests in cheerleader outfits. Kvetched music journo J. Escobedo Shepherd @jawnita: “I love/hate Madonna, o.g. cultural appropriator, and I find her misuse of Minaj and MIA offensive.” Oh, well, you can’t please everyone. (2/6a)
