Clive's Party Goes On Despite Whitney's Death

THE SHOW MUST GO ON: After conflicting media reports, Clive Davis' party is going on, despite the death of Whitney Houston tonight at the very same Beverly Hilton where the affair is taking place, and where Davis was also staying. Houston was discovered by her bodyguard at around 3:56 p.m. (PT), according to publicist Courtney Barnes, whose client Ray J has been dating the diva. Houston was reportedly set to attend, as well as, according to some sources, perform, at tonight's gala, along with the likes of scheduled artists Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige , Elvis Costello and Diana Krall, Tony Bennett, Jessie J and Ray Davies and Jackson Browne with the 88, among others. Houston apparently performed at a Grammy-themed event on Thursday night, where she got into a scuffle with X Factor contestant Stacy Francis that had to be broken up by boyfriend Ray J, one of several instances of bizarre behavior leading up to her death. She also just completed producing and co-starring opposite Jordin Sparks in a reboot of the 1976 movie, Sparkle, a film, ironically, about drug addiction in the music business which featured Irene Cara. Recording Academy President Neil Portnow issued the following statement: "Six-time Grammy winner Whitney Houston was one of the world's greatest pop singers of all time who leaves behind a robust musical soundtrack spanning the past three decades. Her powerful voice graced many memorable and award-winning songs. A light has been dimmed in our music community today, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, fans and all who have been touched by her beautiful voice." And just as Portnow predicted in his conversation with HITS about last-minute changes, there will be a hastily assembled tribute to the singer at tomorrow night's Grammy awards featuring Jennifer Hudson and Chaka Khan, as a significant pall will be cast over the event. Meanwhile, the late singer's Greatest Hits album is now trending at #1 on iTunes, with 19 songs in the Top 200. (2/11p)
