10:40 P.M. FREEZE-OUT: Apparently, London bureaucrats don’t have a whole lotta respect for rock history, pulling the plug on Bruce Springsteen and surprise guest Paul McCartney in the middle of “Twist and Shout,” to the dismay of an estimated 80k fans gathered in Hyde Park. At least they managed to get through "I Saw Her Standing There," backed by the E Street Band and Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello (embedded above), before the authorities abruptly called an end to the celebration. The organizers of the Hard Rock Calling fest had reportedly promised London's Westminster Council that the show would end by 10:15, and the show exceeded that time by 25 minutes before the electricity was shut off. "One of the great gigs ever in my opinion,” Steven Van Zandt tweeted. “But seriously, when did England become a police state?" (7/16a)
