FLIPPING FORMATS: Ex-Clear Channel honcho Randy Michaels’ Merlin Media has changed direction, with news stations WEMP N.Y.and WIQI Chicago switching immediately to Alternative-leaning New Rock 101.9 and Adult Hits i101, respectively. Said Michaels: "It was a difficult decision to make, but after a year of minimal audience engagement, coupled with the format’s inherent expense, I felt it was time to make a change. I’d like to thank the people who poured their heart and soul into the effort and I wish them all the best." Interim OM Jim Richards will oversee both stations. WEMP’s first hour this morning included songs by the Beastie Boys, Alex Clare, Foo Fighters, Third Eye Blind, Phoenix, Of Monsters and Men, Offspring, Black Keys, Pearl Jam and Rage Against the Machine.
