1D passes Richie, hitting 1m this week

THE DIRECTION IS UPWARD: One Direction’s Up All Night has passed Lionel Richie’s Tuskegee to become the second biggest album of the year so far, behind Adele’s 21. That gives Columbia the year’s two top sellers. 1D is poised to cross the 1 million mark on this week’s chart, becoming the first album released in 2012 to reach that milestone, nearly seven full months into the year. Adele’s blockbuster has sold another 3.7 million during that time. (7/23a)
