Amazon launches AutoRip

RIP ON: Amazon has pulled the trigger on a new service, AutoRip, that lets buyers of CDs get the full MP3 versions for free--and to have those digital files available for streaming from the cloud (i.e. Amazon's Cloud Player). So if everything works as it should, as soon as you buy physical product from the e-tailing behemoth, you'll be able to listen to it anywhere and in any way your little heart desires. Not only that, but you can use the (for now U.S.-only)  service for  CDs purchased as long ago as 1998, provided said discs are "AutoRip eligible." How many CDs fall into that category? "There are over 50,000 AutoRip CDs available today on Amazon," reads a blurb on the site, "including a wide range of best sellers, recent releases and classics such as 21 by Adele, °Uno!, °Dos!, and °Tre! by Green Day, Overexposed by Maroon 5, The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, and Thriller by Michael Jackson. Keep checking back, because we’re adding more AutoRip titles every day." Will this initiative give Amazon a leg up on market giant iTunes (now said to be worth more than parent Apple was worth when the store first launched)? Some observers say a total revamp of (and more effective marketing about) Amazon's digital-music store could actually get some rain out of that cloud. (1/10p)
