Your Weakend Box Office

YOUR WEAKEND BOX OFFICE: Kathryn Bigelow may have been snubbed by Oscar voters for Best Director, but her Zero Dark Thirty easily hunted down the top spot in this weekend’s box office results in its first week of wide release. The controversial Osama bin Laden manhunt drama tortured $24 million worth of theatergoing receipts to easily finish #1 in the tally, with a cumulative domestic total now close to $30 million. The Sony film earned five Academy Award nominations last week, including best picture, original screenplay and best actress for Jessica Chastain as the dogged CIA operative Maya. Open Road Films' horror parody A Haunted House starring Marlon Wayans came in second place with a solid $18.8 million. The Warner Bros. mobster drama Gangster Squad with Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling as undercover police officers in ‘40s and ’50s L.A., opened in third place with $16.7 million.
