Idol Beatles special

JOHN, PAUL, GEORGE & JIMMY: Last night’s episode of American Idol had an added element of intrigue in that each of the nine remaining contestants was charged with the daunting task of interpreting a Beatles song. "If you sing these songs well, they will deliver for you," mentor Jimmy Iovine told the contestants. "If you don't sing them well, the whole world is going to know." Here’s how People.com scored the competition: Country crooner Kree Harrison kicked things off with a booming version of "With a Little Help From My Friends," which wowed the judges. "You're all the cool things about country," raved Keith Urban. Burnell Taylor wasn't familiar with "Let It Be," but he proved to be a quick study, Nicki Minaj saying she loved the way he "caressed" the song and "treated it like it was a newborn baby." Amber Holcomb’s take on "She's Leaving Home" elicited a so-so response from the judges. The judges tore apart Lazaro Arbos’ subdued performance of "In My Life." Candice Glover sang an edgy rendition of "Come Together," which was well-received. Paul Jolley was taken to task for his flamboyant rendition of "Eleanor Rigby," though the audience seemed to like it. Angie Miller’s "Yesterday" (watch it above—it’s short) went over well. Devin Velez put an R&B spin on "The Long and Winding Road." And Janelle Arthur closed the show with an “elegant” (as Mariah put it) performance of "I Will." Results will be announced today at 5 p.m. PT. (3/21a)
