Weakend Box Office Report

YOUR WEAKEND BOX OFFICE REPORT: The one-two punch of caveman cartoon Croods and the White House attack movie Olympus Has Fallen gave Hollywood's box office some much-needed oomph this week. DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox’s 3-D prehistoric adventure, featuring the voices of Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone and Catherine Keener, fired up $44.7 million and another 63.3 million internationally, with a per-screen average of $11k. FilmDistrict’s apocalyptic thriller opened with a total of $30.5 million, better than expected, with a per-screen average of nearly $10k for the movie starring Aaron Eckhart as the President and Gerard Butler as a secret service agent fending off a North Korean invasion. Overall, Hollywood box office is down 13% from the same period last year, and 34% from the same weekend a year ago, when The Hunger Games premiered with a whopping $152.5 million. Disney’s Oz the Great and Powerful tacked on another $22 million for a total of $178 million in its third week, good for #3, followed by Sony’s thriller The Call, with Halle Berry, at #4 adding another $8.7 million for a total of $31 million. The only other newcomer was Focus Features' Tina Fey-Paul Rudd college comedy Admission, which opened in fifth place with a disappointing $6.4 million. Indie A24 Films’ much buzzed-about Spring Breakers, the Harmony Korine art-exploitation film with Disney stars Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens, did surprisingly well, going wide in its second week for $5 million, moving up to #6.
