Box office

WEAKEND BOX OFFICE: Has there ever been a slate of mainstream movies less compelling than this weekend’s fare (or un-fare)? Perusing the feeble field, we’re asking ourselves which of them (if any) they wouldn’t have to pay us to sit through, and that could only be the animated feature The Croods. No need to go into any detail (you’ll find all you could possibly need at Box Office Mojo), but the top five and their grosses were:

1. G.I. Joe: Retaliation (Paramount) $41.2m (debut)
2. The Croods (Fox) $26.5m
3. Tyler Perry's Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor (Lionsgate) $22.3m (debut)
4. Olympus Has Fallen (FilmDistrict) $14m
5. Oz the Great and Powerful (Buena Vista) $11.6m

The situation will improve for grown-ups this Friday with the arrivals of Danny Boyle’s Trance and Robert Redford’s The Company You Keep. (4/1a)
