April Fools Day Stories

FOOLS RUSH IN: It wouldn’t be April Fool’s Day without several made-up stunners making the media rounds. Digital Music News wrote, with straight face, that Google had acquired Spotify for $4.2 billion as part of its plans for streaming radio service YouTube Music, citing a Wall Street Journal link which leads to a Wikipedia entry on April 1. Yet another prominent blogger announced that Warner Music Group had cut a deal with Kickstarter to automatically sign any band that raised either $100k or amassed 1,000 followers. Amoeba.com claimed the retailer obtained Cut Chemist's entire 40,000 piece collection of albums, 12" vinyl and acetates, news which spread virally. Another one being reported out there is Republic RecordsMonte Lipman signing Grumpy Cat to a 360-deal which includes merchandising and online rights. Don’t be fooled by any of them. (4/1p)
