Jepsen Earns Juno Victories

JEPSEN’S JUNO JUGGERNAUT: Carly Rae Jepsen won three of the five Juno Awards she was up for at last night’s Canadian music awards ceremony, including Album of the Year for Kiss and Single of the Year for “Call Me Maybe.” Justin Bieber, who helped boost her career, lost out to Jepsen in two of the categories, but did cop the fan-voted Fan Choice Award, while veteran singer Leonard Cohen was named Artist of the Year. Other winners included Serena Ryder’s Harmony (Best Adult Alternative Album), Rush’s Clockwork Angels (Best Rock Album), Mumford & Sons’ Babel (Best International Albm), The Weeknd (Breakthrough Artist), Metric (Best Alternative Album), Inner Ninja f/David Myles’ “Classified” (Rap Recording), Marianas Trench (Group of the Year), Monster Truck (Breakthrough Group of the Year) and The Tragically Hip’s Bobcaygeon (Best DVD). Veteran singer Cohen was also named Songwriter of the Year, with the award citing three songs from his latest album Old Ideas. His son Adam Cohen accepted it on his behalf. Michael Bublé hosted the gala, opening the show with a skit that saw Dr. Phil and other celebs cast doubts on his ability to host the show. The emotional high point of the night was k.d. lang's moving acceptance speech after being inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. The award included a year's supply of Molson's and back bacon, eh? (4/22p)
