Top 10 workout tracks

TOP 10 MAY WORKOUT TRACKS: Bush’s “Machinehead” is the Ultimate Workout Song of 2013, according to a just-released poll from Gold’s Gym and Men’s Health, outpointing a number of current tracks (see today’s lead story), with 40k people voting. Compare that tally to this up-to-the-minute—and unusually diverse—top 10 from workout site Run Hundred (which can also claim 40k respondents), with such unlikely gym rats as Ash, The Band Perry, the Jonas Brothers, Paramore, Avril Lavigne and Carly Rae Jepsen pumping iron with Daft Punk and will.i.am. This list departs from previous monthly polls, most of which suggest mirrorballs and glowsticks more than dumbbells ans elliptical trainers..

Ash, “Arcadia” – 151 BPM
Krewella, “Alive” – 128 BPM
The Band Perry, “Done” – 102 BPM
Daft Punk & Pharrell, “Get Lucky” – 116 BPM
Alex Gaudino & Mario, “Beautiful” – 128 BPM
Jonas Brothers, “Pom Poms” – 148 BPM
Will.I.Am & Justin Bieber, “#thatPOWER” – 129 BPM
Avril Lavigne, “Here's to Never Growing Up” – 83 BPM
Paramore, “Still Into You” – 137 BPM
Carly Rae Jepsen, “Tonight I'm Getting over You” – 126 BPM

Three of the five guitar-toting acts on the list—Ash, the Jonas Brothers and Paramore—are pushing the tempos beyond the 130 BPM sweet spot for dance and EDM tracks, while Avril and The Band Perry go to the other extreme. Variety is the spice of life at the fitness club. (5/6a)
