2PAC on Broadway

3PACALYPSE SOON: Last year, he made his posthumous comeback at Coachella as a hologram; later this year or next year, it appears, Tupac Shakur will be bringing gangsta rap to Broadway. Reports surfaced yesterday that a musical inspired by and making extensive use of the late, great rapper’s music is in the planning stages. Director Kenny Leon (Fences, The Mountaintop) is presiding over a workshop for the show, which bears the working title Holler If Ya Hear Me, in New York. According to the producers, the musical, set in a Midwestern industrial city during the present, tells the story of two childhood friends "as they struggle to reconcile the challenges and realities of their daily lives with their hopes, dreams and ambitions." The new musical has a book by Todd Kreidler, a dramaturg (that sounds unhygienic) for Radio Golf and Gem of the Ocean, and will be choreographed by Tony winner Wayne Cilento Wicked, Sweet Charity). Tupac’s mother Afeni Shakur is one of the producers. (6/25a)
