Post places McGrath at Sony

CAT’S OUTTA THE BAG—UPDATE: Late yesterday, the New York Post picked up on Judy McGrath’s new partnership with Sony Music, which we first told you about on 6/11 and advanced two days later (see recaps below). In keeping with the former MTV Networks chief’s rep as a media maverick, McGrath has dubbed her venture Astronauts Wanted: No Experience Necessary, the Post’s Claire Atkinson reports. The unit will focus on creating content for young viewers, or “millennials,” across all platforms, including TV and the Web, with content that will go beyond music. “There’s so much of the great content out there,” McGrath told Atkinson. “We will need to find some new ways to reflect the creativity of a new generation.” Since her 2011 departure from MTV, McGrath has been pursued by several former employers, including being courted for a top role at Oprah Winfrey’s OWN and by several private-equity firms. “It could have been funded by an investment company, but here I have a lot of autonomy,” she said. The hire is the latest coup for Doug Morris, quietly provided McGrath with office space at 550 Madison Ave. several months ago. She finally signed a formal contract over the weekend.
