Macca on Kimmel

WHY DON'T WE DO IT IN THE ROAD: They don't close Hollywood Boulevard for many folks. But last night marked the first of two consecutive evenings when a chunk of the storied Tinseltown thoroughfare was closed to traffic, as Sir Paul McCartney performed an hour-plus set, part of which would later be broadcast on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Variously rocking his trademark Hofner bass, piano and guitar—and backed by his superlative band—Macca mixed Beatles, Wings and solo material with aplomb. He began with "Magical Mystery Tour" (which also kicked off his iHeartRadio Festival performance). Next came the rockin' "Save Us" from his aptly titled new album, New; "Junior's Farm"; "Jet"; the bouncy "New" ; "Lady Madonna"; "Birthday"; "Another Day"; new one "Everybody Out There"; "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"; "Band on the Run"; "Back in the U.S.S.R."; "Day Tripper" "Let It Be"; and singalong finale "Hey Jude." The show was available for live streaming on MySpace, where the real-time comments confirmed that the man is as spellbinding to social-media kids as he is to old farts like us. Oh, and event co-sponsor Guinness definitely got its money's worth. Tonight, Justin Timberlake, who has an ownership stake in the newly revamped social-media site, will follow suit. (9/24a)
