Sam Smith BRITs

SONG SMITH: Capitol’s Sam Smith has won the prestigious BRITs Critics Choice Award, an honor previously earned by Adele, Florence & the Machine, Emeli Sande, Tom Odell, Ellie Goulding and Jessie J. The 21-year-old singer, who achieved recognition for his vocals on Naughty Boy’s international #1 “La La La” and Disclosure's "Latch," defeated Ella Eyre and Chle Howl to win the prize, which is intended to “identify future British recording talent before it happens.” A board of journalists and other music experts selected the winner. 2012 recipient Odell will present the award to Smith at the Brits nomination announcement show, The Brits Are Coming, on 1/9, broadcast on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show, which will also feature a live performance by Smith. After the show, everyone will enjoy some lovely beans on toast. (12/12a)
