GONIFF WITH THE WIND, PART 3: In her portrait of Len Blavatnik’s adventures from Russia to New York, The New Yorker’s Connie Bruck describes Lyor Cohen as “a large man who sometimes conveys the impression that a blow may be seconds away.” Yet, as she reports, once CEO Stephen Cooper insisted on Cohen’s departure, Lyor’s erstwhile pal Blavatnik assented. Ultimately it came down to money, as the Ukrainian-born mogul simply doesn’t believe in paying executives the kind of astronomical salaries to which Lyor was then accustomed. “Whatever the circumstances of Cohen’s departure, it saved Blavatnik money; the year before Cohen left Warner, his total compensation was $11 million … in 2012, Cooper’s first year as CEO, his total compensation was 4.3 million, a fraction of what his subordinate Cohen had made.” (1/22a)
