Hozier at the Troubadour

IRISH UP, PART 2: (From our resident #henchipster) I hit the Troubadour last night for a charmingly ethereal set from Columbia’s Hozier. The Irish singer/songwriter packed the sold-out venue to the brim and kept the vast audience entranced. “Take Me to Church,” the spine-tingling, passionate single from 2013’s EP of the same name, was my favorite track of the night. The song is a lusty battle cry for human rights during a time of severe anti-LGBT violence and discrimination in Russia and elsewhere. Other favorites included the intricately plucked and deliciously sentimental “Cherry Wine,” along with “From Eden,” the title track from his latest EP, which dropped in April. The set also included a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” and a funky rendition of Amerie’s “1 Thing." The experience left me breathless, but that may have been because the over-capacity crowd was crushing my ribcage. (5/21p)
