Jack White "Just One Drink" live

SCRAPING THE SHIT RIGHT OFF THEIR SHOES: In honor of Jack White’s impending chart-topper for Lazaretto next Tuesday, let’s take a look at the second number from his appearance on The Tonight Show Monday night. “Just One Drink” falls into the pocket of the Rolling Stones between Let It Bleed and Exile on Main St.—the realm of “Let It Bleed,” “Country Honk,” Dead Flowers” and “Sweet Virginia”—which is a very good place to land. White's co-star on this tune and elsewhere on the album is violinist Lillie Mae Rische. There’s an especially disarming Mutt & Jeff moment starting at 1:48 on the clip when the diminutive Lillie Mae prances over to Jack to harmonize on his mic, problem being she’s at least a foot shorter than him and doesn’t come close to reaching it—she looks like a baby bird stretching her neck upward for the worm that’s dangling from its mom’s beak. Adorable. (6/13a)
