Box office

YOUR START OF SUMMER WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: The latest numbers tell us (1) that Kevin Hart can carry a movie whose modest budget (in this case $24m) ensures that it’ll be profitable right out of the gate, and (2) that Americans preferred being outdoors this weekend. The audience for the debuting Jersey Boys was 71% 50 or older, and because older moviegoers typically don’t rush out on opening weekend, Clint Eastwood’s Four Seasons biopic could be in for a solid run, according to Box Office Mojo. The animated How to Train Your Dragon 2 looks like a disappointment, while 22 Jump Street and Maleficent are exhibiting staying power.

1. Think Like a Man Too (Screen Gems) – $30m, 2,225/$13,483 avg. (debut)
2. 22 Jump Street (Sony) – $29m (-49.2%) 3,306/$8,772 avg. (week 2)
3. How to Train Your Dragon 2 (Fox) – $25.3m (-48.8%) 4,268 avg. (week 2)
4. Jersey Boys (WB) – $13.5m, 2,905/$4,652 avg. (debut)
5. Maleficent (Disney) – $13m (-29.7%), 3,450/$3,772 avg. (week 4)

Doug Liman’s Tom Cruise-starring sci-fi flick Edge of Tomorrow earned $10m+ on a modest 37.4% drop in its third weekend to finish in sixth place, one slot above The Fault in Our Stars ($8.6m, -41.9%). The well-reviewed Aussie film The Rover, starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson, expanded from five theaters to 599 and grossed $500k, a 621% uptick. (6/23a)
