YOUR WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Scarlett Johansson used enough of her brain this weekend to bow atop the box-office heap with the sci-fi/action outing Lucy. Another formidable combatant, Hercules, debuted at #2. In old-release news, with this week’s haul, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has earned $172m, more than it cost to produce.

- Hercules Paramount $29m 3,595/$8,067 avg. (debut)
- Dawn of the Planet … Fox $16.4m (-55%) 3,668/$4,471 avg. (week 3)
- The Purge: Anarchy Universal $9.9m (-67%) 2,856/$3,465 avg. (week 2)
- Planes: Fire & Rescue Disney $9.3m (-47%) 3,839/$2,423 avg. (week 2)
Two other debuts hit the Top 10, Rob Reiner’s Michael Douglas-Diane Keaton comedy And So It Goes (#8, $4.5m) and spy thriller A Most Wanted Man, starring the late, lamented Philip Seymour Hoffman. Meanwhile, Richard Linklater's acclaimed Boyhood makes a scrappy $16k per-screen average and ticks up 47% in its third week, and—despite lukewarm reviews—Woody Allen’s Magic in the Moonlight earns a glowing $25k per screen in 17 locations. Oh, and not that it matters, but that whole "10% of your brain" thing is complete bullshit. (7/28a)
