Bono tells Time, "We were paid."

THE NEW NORMAL, PART 573,426: Following U2’s shocker yesterday, Time managed to buttonhole Bono for a quick chat about the band’s motives for giving away Songs of Innocence. “The charts are broken,” he explained, adding that he wants to see artists’ reach measured by how much they’re listened to, by whatever medium or method. But Bono was quick to point out that “We were paid. I don’t believe in free music. Music is a sacrament.” He wouldn’t say how much, but as we reported yesterday, the band and UMG’s deal with Apple is valued at north of $100m, including marketing and advertising costs. (9/10a)
