ADD TAYLOR V. SPOTIFY: WSJ media reporter Hannah Karp advanced the story this morning, stating that Big Machine several months ago asked Spotify to make 1989 available on the streaming service only outside the U.S. The label’s reasoning: that Swift is a giant star in the States, but she’s still trying to expand her fan base abroad. Spotify denied that request, according to Karp’s source, because the service requires all participating artists to make their music available in all of the 58 countries where it operates. The story also points out that labels can pull an individual artist’s work from Spotify with only a few days’ notice, though most labels have long-term contracts that prevent them from abruptly withdrawing all their music. But Karp made two errors, stating that 1989 came out last Tuesday (it was a Monday release), and attributing the news of Scott Borchetta’s $200m asking price for Big Machine to an 11/1 story in the N.Y. Post; HITSI.B. Bad broke the story in a column posted on 10/23. (11/4a)
