SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW FOR GRAMMY WEEK

“One Night Only” Explores the History of Live Performance, Re:Generation Music Project Pairs DJ/Producers With Legends
These Grammy people really need to hire a professional to edit the names of their shows. On Thursday of Grammy Week (2/9), the Grammy Foundation will host "One Night Only: A Celebration of the Live Music Experience"—the 14th Annual Grammy Foundation Music Preservation Project. The mixed-media concert will juxtapose live musical performances and historical footage from preservation archives.

The intent of the event is to “explore the history and evolution of live concert performances and celebrate the various and invaluable contributions of those events, the key players behind them, and their influence on the American cultural landscape.”

Performers include Robert Cray, Jonny Lang, Shelby Lynne, Mavis Staples, Dave Koz, Ledisi; and the Colburn Orchestra, A Fine Frenzy, Marc Martel (winner of the Queen Extravaganza contest), The Voice finalist Beverly McClellan, and Tyrese. Professional panelist Sharon Osbourne and guitarist Steve Vai will co-host, writer/producer Darrell Brown will serve as musical director and Bret Michaels (a “rock icon and philanthropist,” according to the press release) will close the show. And speaking of star attractions, Neil Portnow himself will be in attendance, along with other prominent music industry leaders and members of the Recording Academy.

The event was organized in order to promote the Grammy Foundation's mission of “recognizing and preserving our musical past, so that future generations can continue to benefit from an appreciation and understanding of those contributions.” General admission tickets are $25. For tickets and info, go to www.grammyfoundation.org or http://flavorus.com/grammyfoundationonenightonly.

Also on Feb. 9, at an as yet undisclosed Hollywood venue, a press day will take place for Re:Generation Music Project, a new documentary produced in association with the Grammys and presented by Hyundai Veloster. The carmaker has been promoting both the film and the model in a series of currently airing TV spots.

The feature-length doc “examines music’s past, present and future, while yielding five revolutionary collaborations in the process.” Directed by Amir Bar-Lev (The Tillman Story, My Kid Could Paint That), the film follows the Crystal Method, DJ Premier, Pretty Lights, Mark Ronson and Best New Artist nominee Skrillex as they collaborate with artists from outside the electronic/DJ genre, using technology to mix musical styles and generations in the creation of five original tracks.

In the film, Skrillex heads into an L.A. studio with members of The Doors to collaborate on a new song, “Breakn’ a Sweat.” The Crystal Method heads to Detroit to work with Martha Reeves and the Funk Brothers on the R&B number “I’m Not Leaving.” Ronson works up the original New Orleans jazz piece “A La Modeliste” with Erykah Badu, Trombone Shorty, Mos Def, Zigaboo Modeliste and members of the Dap Kings. DJ Premier works with NAS and Boston's Berklee Symphony Orchestra for his “Regeneration.” The documentary culminates in Nashville as Pretty Lights, LeAnn Rimes and the great Ralph Stanley team up on the traditional "Wayfaring Stranger."

The film will have a one-night only theatrical release on Feb. 16, with encore screenings on Feb 23.
