THE DECEMBERISTS, CAKE TAKE A PIECE OF VIBE PIE

Alternative Mainstays Feel the Buzz in Year-End Rush
The Decemberists and Cake are picking up some momentum in the waning weeks of 2010, positioning themselves for a run after the first of the year, as both enter HITSVibe-Rater chart of the new and developing.

What better month for Portland, OR’s The Decemberists to launch their new album, the follow-up to their Capitol Records breakthrough The Hazards of Love/ The band's making a big move at Triple A with “Down by the Water,” the first track from their upcoming album, The King Is Dead, which hits retail Jan. 18. They launch a U.S tour Jan. 2 through Feb. 19, with three nights scheduled at N.Y.’s Beacon Theater before embarking on a European swing. There’s also plenty of press, including features in Rolling Stone, Nylon and Relix for the Ron Laffitte/Jason Colton-managed band in the Red Light stable. For the complete Vibe entry, click here.

Veteran Sacramento, CA, alternative band Cake return on Jan. 11 with their first release in six years, Showroom of Compassion, for their own Upbeat label through WMG’s Independent Label Group. The first single, “Sick of You,” is already Top 5 at PoMo and Top 10 at Triple A. Look for TV appearances on Jimmy Fallon (1/12) and features in Alt Press, Spin and Rolling Stone, with a stateside jaunt starting Jan. 14 through Feb.
