DECEMBER IN JANUARY

Kidz Bop, The Script, Social D., Gregg Allman and James Blunt Bow in Top
Consider the new year started. After a couple of the lowest #1 sales totals in history, the record industry enters 2011 in high style, with six debuts in the Top 10, including the top four.

The Decemberists lead the way with The King Is Dead, which debuts on top with 91k in sales, thanks to a nifty set-up by the folks over at Capitol Records. The Portland folk-rockers follow their critically acclaimed smash, The Hazards of Love, with an album that harks back to some of singer/songwriter Colin Meloy’s primary influences, like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, The Band, R.E.M. and The Smiths.

Razor & Tie returns with the 19th iteration of their best-selling Kidz Bop Kids series, which continues the label’s cottage industry with a #2 debut of nearly 70k.

Epic’s Dublin pop-rockers The Script are back with their sophomore effort, Science & Faith, rewarding its followers with a #3 bow, good for 50k.

Rounding out the Top 5 debuts is Epitaph’s Social Distortion, with Hard Times & Nursery Rhymes, their label bow and first new album in six year, entering the chart at #4 and 40k in sales.

New Elektra’s Bruno Mars is the highest holdover, remaining steady at #5 with his hit album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans.

Rounder legend Gregg Allman makes his label debut with Low Country Blues, which debuts at #6, while Custard/Atlantic crooner James Blunt’s Some Kind of Trouble is a newcomer at #9. Capitol/EMI’s surging Katy Perry (#13-7, +37%), along with holdovers Big Machine’s Taylor Swift (#8) and YM/Cash Money/Universal Motown’s Nicki Minaj (#10), complete the Top 10.

Other chart newcomers include Reunion Christian act Brandon Heath (#26) and Roadrunner’s Times of Grace (#48).

Kemosabe/RCA/RMG’s Ke$ha is the week’s biggest double-digit gainer, moving #39-24, +41% with Cannibal, followed by Island/IDJ’s Bon Jovi (#38-28, +34%), Atlantic’s Zac Brown Band (#33-29, +21%), LaFace/JLG’s P!nk (#18-14, +18%), Island/IDJ’s Justin Bieber My World 2.0 (#42-37, +14%) and Big Machine’s Rascal Flatts (#36, +11%).

Hitting stores this week are WB’s Iron + Wine, Jive/JLG’s Grammy Nominees, Downtown’s Cold War Kids, Blue Note/Capitol's Amos Lee and Astralwerks' David Guetta.
