SEX, RACE AND AUTOTUNE: THE "BED INTRUDER SONG"
Controversial New Clip Climbing the iTunes Charts
Tamara Conniff is a well-respected music industry pundit who has just launched TheComet.com, which she describes as “the Huffington Post of music.” Hey, if HITS can be the Mad magazine of the record business, why not? This is the latest in a regular series of opinion pieces in which Tamara will explore issues affecting the current climate. In other words...blame her, she wrote it.

Yes it’s funny. It reminds me of a Saturday Night Live skit. I can’t help but sing along:

“He’s climbing in your windows/He’s snatchin your people up/Hide your kids/Hide your wife”

But, I also think it’s racist. And last time I checked, attempted rape was not funny. But see for yourself here on YouTube, where it's over 11 million views and counting.

But that’s not the point right? Nor was it the Gregory Brothers’ point. It was more of an accident, really. The Brooklyn-based foursome has been doing “AutoTune the News” viral videos (taking TV news items and turning them into video/song parodies) for a while. The “Bed Intruder Song” was just another one.

It just happened to be the one to get the most attention, views and sales. Over 10,000 tracks were downloaded from iTunes in two days.  Of course that makes sense—four white musicians out of Brooklyn doing a parody of an attempted rape in the projects—obviously everyone wants to listen to it on their iPods!

It’s a remix of local Alabama TV interview with Antoine Dobson about the attempted rape of his sister Kelly. Antoine pulled the perpetrator off his sis, and saved the day, even though he comes off like a total moron in the newscast and in the song.

Antoine has now been coined “homo thug” across the Internet. But, Mr. Dobson is making the most out of his 15 minutes. He put up own website, and he’s getting 50% of the royalties off the track, since he did, after all, write the lyrics.

“Hide your kids. Hide your wife.” Attempted rape has just turned into an Internet smash.
