With just one album in the Top 10 (Sade at #5), though Susan Boyle just missed, Rob Stringer’s Columbia/Epic Label Group used a series of best-selling Glee soundtracks to maintain its hold as the #1 label for current marketshare.

AFTER NINE MONTHS, Q4 IS BORN

UMG Pulls Away from SME; Columbia/Epic, IGA, RCA/Jive Lead
Coming around the turn at the three-quarter pole, Doug Morris and Lucian Grainge’s resurgent UMG took the lead from Rolf Schmidt-Holtz’s SME, after they were deadlocked at the half-year turn.

Thanks to six entries in the Top 10, including Eminem (#2), Justin Bieber (#3, #10), Lady Gaga (#4), Drake (#7) and Black Eyed Peas (#8), UMG scored 29.9% of total marketshare, trailed by SME (27.7%), Edgar Bronfman’s WMG (15.6%) and Roger Faxon’s EMI, the only one of the Big Four to show upward mobility from the same period last year, at 10.5% (up 1.5), thanks to the #1 album of the year, Capitol Nashville’s Lady Antebellum, though their reign will probably be usurped by Eminem within the next week or two.

With just one album in the Top 10 (Sade at #5), though Susan Boyle just missed, Rob Stringer’s Columbia/Epic Label Group used a series of best-selling Glee soundtracks to maintain its hold as the #1 label for current marketshare, up 1.6 percentage points over last year.

Jimmy Iovine’s IGA leapfrogged Barry WeissRCA/Jive Label Group, with strong showings by Eminem, Lady Gaga and Black Eyed Peas, to grab the #2 slot with 8.5%, a gain of .9 over last year. Weiss’ group remained even at 7.5%, with hits from Usher (#6) and Ke$ha (#9), while Alicia Keys also scored Top 20 sales.

Mel Lewinter’s Universal Records Group rode hits from both Monte and Avery Lipman (Taylor Swift and Jack Johnson) and Sylvia Rhone (#7 Drake and Lil Wayne) to the #4 slot with 6.7% (up 1.4 from last year).

Craig Kallman and Julie Greenwald’s Atlantic Records slumped from 8.7% last year to 6.3%, with their leading group Grammy Best New Artists Zac Brown Band. L.A. Reid’s Island Def Jam was up 1.3 to 5.8%, with two Justin Bieber albums in the Top 10.

Warner Bros. was up .7 to 5.7%, sporting Michael Buble, but the year’s big winner was Mike Dungan’s Capitol Nashville, up 1.7 to 3.5%, largely due to Lady A.

Greg Thompson’s Capitol Music Group climbed .4 to 3%, with Now 33 on its scorecard, while new head Gary Overton’s SME Nashville was up .6, thanks to this albums from Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert.
