Tom Hooper had seemed to be in over his head among a crew of A-list auteurs led by The Social Network’s more deserving David Fincher. But it was that kind of night.

OSCARS GO OLD-SCHOOL, BUT THEY GET THE MUSIC WINNERS RIGHT

Reznor/Ross and Randy Newman Fittingly Honored, but the Night Belongs to the Traditional Values of The King’s Speech
The Zenyatta-like charge of The King’s Speech during the last six weeks culminated in a Best Picture Oscar Sunday night, providing a suitable ending to a throwback evening. If co-hosts Anne Hathaway and James Franco were chosen in an effort to court a younger demo, as several punchlines, the material written for them could’ve been dusted off from the 1950s in terms of its innocent charm. Ideed, not only was their shtick the antithesis of Rickie Gervais’ barbed with at the Golden Globes in January, it also seemed tame compared to footage of Bob Hope hosting the 1953 show. The extremely likable if non-threatening twosome did honor their elders when introducing Billy Crystal, who showed up in a cameo, though Chris Rock was nowhere in sight—perhaps opting to watch the Knicks upset the Heat on ESPN.

Along with the top award, The King's Speech yielded a Best Actor Oscar for Colin Firth, Best Best Original Screenplay for David Seidler and, in the lone shocker, Best Director for Tom Hooper. The young Englishman had seemed to be in over his head among a crew of A-list auteurs led by The Social Network’s more deserving David Fincher. But it was that kind of night. At least Aaron Sorkin won for Best Adapted Screenplay.

As expected, Natalie Portman ran away with the Best Actress Oscar for The Black Swan, while both Supporting awards came out of the ensemble cast of The FighterChristian Bale and an F-bomb dropping Melissa Leo (outpointing the same film’s Amy Adams).

As for the music, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ haunting postmodern score for The Social Network deserved to win and did just that, and the Academy likewise rewarded Randy Newman’s “We Belong Together” for Best Original Song from the brilliant Animated Feature winner Toy Story 3. That win made Randy two for 20 in terms of career nominations.

As for the whole enchilada, why you would come to this mangy site for a full list of Oscar nominees and winners is beyond us, but as long as you’re here, we’ll save you the trouble of Googling for legit coverage of the awards. Winners are in bold.
