WAYNE’S WORLD

Plies, N.E.R.D., Alanis and My Morning Jacket Also Bow in Top 10, with Plenty of Titles Up
Weezy does it.

Mixtape master Lil Wayne proves to be Cash Money as the N’awlins rapper lives up to his boasts by nailing the highest-selling debut in over three years with the Universal Motown album Tha Carter III bows at #1 with a staggering 969k in sales.

That’s the most first-week sales since 50 Cent scored 1.14 million back in March ’05 for the chart debut of his Massacre album.

Give the man a “Lollipop,” because he’s practically “A Milli”onaire.

Lil Wayne isn’t the only game in town this week, either.

Slip-N-Slide Tampa area rapper PliesDefinition of Real enters the chart at #2, along with newcomers including Neptunes rock alias N.E.R.D.’s Interscope album Seeing Sounds (#7), Maverick/Reprise singer/songwriter Alanis Morissette’s Flavors of Entanglement (#8) and ATO jam band rulers My Morning Jacket’s critically acclaimed Evil Urges (#9).

Capitol’s Now 28 (#3), LaFace/ZLG’s Usher (#4), last week’s chart-topping Reprise album from Disturbed (#5), Frontier’s Journey Wal-Mart exclusive, Revelation (#6) and DGC/Interscope PoMo standard-bearers Weezer (#10) round out the Top 10.

Other chart newcomers include SBMG Nashville’s Montgomery Gentry (#21), Nonesuch country-rock legend Emmylou Harris (#22), Columbia’s Jakob Dylan (#25), Thrive’s Total Club Hits ThriveMix (#26) and Nickelodeon/Columbia’s iCarly (#30).

MCA Nashville’s George Strait (#47-34, +62%) is the week’s biggest double-digit gainer, coming off Father’s Day weekend, followed by Brushfire/Universal Republic’s Jack Johnson (#35-32, +36%), Arista Nashville’s Alan Jackson (#42-37, +36%), BNA/SBMG Nashville’s Kenny Chesney (#45-39, +36%), Atlantic’s Kid Rock (#22-19, +27%), Arista Nashville’s Brad Paisley (#50, +25%), Reprise’s Frank Sinatra (#16-12, +21%), Epic’s Natasha Bedingfield (#46, +19%), UME/Show Dog’s Toby Keith (#18, +17%), Def Jam/IDJ’s Rick Ross (#44, +17%), Mercury Nashville’s Sugarland (#47, +16%), Columbia’s Neil Diamond (#27, +14%), Arista./RMG’s Carrie Underwood (#33, +14%) and Blue Note’s Al Green (#42, +12%).

Next week, look for Capitol’s Coldplay to lead the charge, with Disney’s Camp Rock soundtrack featuring the Jonas Brothers, IDJ’s Rihanna deluxe edition, Capitol’s Katy Perry and Epic's Judas Priest also claiming chart turf.
