IDJ South Beach Rapper Takes Top Spot, SBMG/CMG’s Now 27, Snoop Dogg, Fat Joe Debut Top 10
There’s some serious hip-hop heat coming out of Miami.

South Beach rapper Rick RossDef Jam/IDJ album Trilla tops the HITS Album chart this week, with a one-week total of 188k.

That was enough to beat back Now 27, the latest edition, this one on SBMG through John Ingrassia’s Commercial Music Group, which also has the #5 album in Sony Legacy’s Michael Jackson 25th anniversary Thriller re-package.

The hits compilation, which has been hurt by the cherry-picking allowed since the emergence of iTunes, scores 159k, a long way from its heyday of half-million first weeks.

Geffen rap icon Snoop Dogg’s Ego Trippin’ debuts at #4, with 132k, followed by Brushfire/Universal Republic surf folk-rocker Jack Johnson’s Sleep Through Static at #4.

Terror Squad/Capitol rap vet Fat Joe’s Elephant in the Room is the other Top 10 newcomer at #7. The rest of the leader board includes Arista Nashville’s Alan Jackson, last week’s chart-topper with Good Time, at #6; Epic’s Sara Bareilles, holding strong at #8; IDJ’s Janet Jackson at #9 and Universal Motown’s Erykah Badu rounding it out at #10.

SBMG/CMG’s Now ‘80s, a selection of hits from the MTV era, debuts at #11, while yet another Hannah Montana album from Walt Disney Records, this one a soundtrack to the filmed Best of Both Worlds Concert, is #12.

Interscope group OneRepublic’s Dreaming Out Loud leads the double-digit gainers for the week, moving #46-20 +49%, as the single, “Stop and Stare” approaches Top 10 Pop. Def Jam/IDJ’s The-Dream is also upwardly mobile, going #45-31, +22%.

Razor & Tie’s Alvin & the Chipmunks soundtrack (#22-16) and Hollywood’s Jonas Brothers (#24-18) are also up 10% apiece.

Hitting the streets today are Bad Boy’s Making the Band winners Danity Kane, Atlantic’s Flo Rida and French-Israeli star Yael Naim with her Air Mac spot, Downtown’s Gnarls Barkley as well as Island’s two-CD reissue of The Bravery.
