WHEELS 2.0 CRANKS UP THE AC

This Week’s Sounds Are as Hot as the Three-Digit Temp in the Valley

Wheels is all over the map (literally and figuratively) this week, as Erica heads up to San Francisco for the second annual Outside Lands festival. We hear it’s 65 and windy by the Bay, which will make for a nice reprieve from 100+ SF Valley temps—oy! Send some recommendations for the flight home on Monday ([email protected]), and be sure to catch up to date info on the weekend’s line-up on twitter: @rknthefreewrld.

ONE TO WATCH
M.I.
(www.myspace.com/realmrincredible): Leveraging his awards for Best New Act of the Year and Best Rapper from the Nigerian Arts and Entertainment Awards, M.I. (pronounced “em-eye,” which stands for Mr. Incredible) is quickly making his way to the ears of U.S. audiences. Propelled by an early feel for drums and keyboards, he fell in love with hip-hop around the time he started high school. Getting his hands on albums from DMX and Lauryn Hill inspired M.I. to begin writing his own music and poems. Building his base in Nigeria, he signed a 2006 deal with Chocolate City (which sold 30k units in Africa in 30 minutes) and then released a highly anticipated album last year. The rap messiah, as his fans back home refer to him, is touting a blazing hot single, “Safe,” that is getting attention now. His words will move you with their poignant messages, and his beats will get you off your butts and onto the dance floor. Check him out on YouTube to get a feel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUXsuObsmqk), and be sure to hit up his MySpace page and help build the buzz, cuz he’s brand new.

ON DECK
Endless Hallway
(www.myspace.com/endlesshallway; @endlesshallway): This five-piece from L.A. reminds us of a new generation Jane’s Addiction. The band just completed their debut album with producer Noah Shain (As Tall as Lions, Nico Vega, Orson) and recently signed to Wind-up. The tracks to check out first include “Cell” and “Solvency.” Endless Hallway has a great sound, and we expect to be hearing a lot more from them in the coming months. Check them out live at the Sunset Strip Music Festival on Sept. 12.

BAND/ARTIST UPDATES
Care Bears on Fire
(www.myspace.com/carebearsonfire): Teen trio made their TV debut on Letterman 8/26. In case you missed the performance, be sure to get your fill here: http://bit.ly/19odOM.

Jason Derulo (www.myspace.com/jasonderulo): “Whatcha Say," out on Beluga Heights, has freakishly exploded at iTunes this past week. It’s now #5 on all of iTunes, and Derulo has got the mobile market cornered as well, with the #4 ringtone this week.

BUZZIN’
The Working Title
(www.myspace.com/theworkingtitle; @theworkingtitle): Cool band from Charleston, SC, led by singer/songwriter Joel Hamilton. Musically, this is ’60s-70s influenced, hooky indie rock, a la Grizzly Bear and Fleet Foxes. Band is currently seeking a label to market and distribute. Check ’em out in live in L.A. Sept. 2 at the Knitting Factory.
