Next week, look for Hollywood’s Miley Cyrus and Mercury Nashville’s Sugarland to battle it out for the top spot after hitting retail today with brisk sales.

NAS’ UNTITLED TAKES CHART TITLE

Controversial Rapper Goes #1 Over Lil Wayne, Mellencamp, Banner, Swift Bow
No matter what you call his new album, and he dubs it Untitled, Def Jam/IDJ’s Nas is #1 this week, with 181k in sales, more than enough to top fellow hip-hop icon Lil Wayne’s record-breaking Cash Money/Universal Motown release, Tha Carter III, with 107k.

Decca’s Mamma Mia! soundtrack explodes to #3, up a week-best 89% to 91k, thanks to the opening of the hit movie, which grossed $27.7 million since its opening last Friday.

Capitol’s Coldplay (#4) and Disney’s Camp Rock soundtrack (#5) round out the Top 5, followed by Atlantic’s Kid Rock at #6, up another 19%.

Three Top 10 newcomers are next, including Hear Music Rock and Roll Hall of Famer John Mellencamp’s Life, Death, Love & Freedom (#7), SRC/Universal Motown rapper David Banner’s Greatest Story Ever Told (#8) and Big Machine rising country star Taylor Swift, with a Wal-Mart exclusive, Beautiful Eyes (#9).

Rihanna’s Def Jam/IDJ repackage of Good Girl Gone Bad rounds out the Top 10.

Other Top 50 debuts include Everfine/Atlantic’s O.A.R. (#12), Curb/WB’s Randy Travis (#14), WB’s The Dark Knight soundtrack (#19), Vagrant’s Hold Steady (#31) and Columbia’s Bruce Springsteen Magic Tour Highlights (#49). Alanis Morissette’s Maverick/Reprise album Flavors of Entanglement, re-enters at #34.

Aside from Mamma Mia! and Kid Rock, the double-digit gainers for the week include Atlantic’s Jason Mraz (#26, +30%), Taylor Swift (#13, +23%), Reprise’s Frank Sinatra (#46-40, +18%), Arista Nashville’s Alan Jackson (#33, +17%), Frontier’s Journey (#17, +14%), BNA/SBMG Nashville’s Kenny Chesney (#37, +14%) and Atlantic’s Death Cab for Cutie (#43, +11%).

Attribute the upward chart mobility of Mraz, Morissette, Sinatra, Death Cab and Mercury’s Duffy (#22, +8%) to Starbucks clearing out their music stock.

Next week, look for Hollywood’s Miley Cyrus and Mercury Nashville’s Sugarland to battle it out for the top spot after hitting retail today with brisk sales.
