LIVE NATION TO NAB SHAKIRA?

N.Y. Post Reports Latin Superstar Is Next Up for 360 Treatment in $70 Million Deal
Hips don't lie... and neither does a $70 million payday.

That's the amount concert promoter Live Nation is ready to shell out to Shakira to bring her into the fold, it was reported in the N.Y. Post this morning by Peter Lauria and Brian Garrity.

Sources said the 360 deal will be for recording, touring, merchandising and other rights,

The deal comes just a week after Live Nation Chairman Michael Cohl resigned his post, allegedly over a disagreement with boss Michael Rapino over just such deals. Insiders say Rapino put the kibosh on a 360-type arrangement Cohl sought with veteran metal band Motley Crue.

Cohl's departure has sent shock waves through Live Nation, with employees in the company's Artist Nation division--which was set up to house Madonna, Jay-Z and the other artists expected to sign 360 deals—fearing layoffs.

While talks with Shakira have been ongoing, the Post reported that Rapino wanted to move quickly to finalize the deal as a way to reassure employees of his commitment to the Artist Nation strategy.

Shakira still owes Epic Records another English-language studio album, expected next spring, as well as a greatest hits record, and is unlikely to deliver her first album to Live Nation until late next year or early 2010.

Sources say Live Nation views Shakira as a top-level international touring draw, particularly in Latin America, where she routinely sells out stadiums. Live Nation is banking on her to be their Latin music pillar, much like Madonna is for pop and Jay-Z is for hip-hop.

"Live Nation is trying to establish itself in a big way in each genre no matter what the loss leader is going to be on it," said one major label executive.
