With AC/DC’s Columbia album Black Ice, hitting Wal-Mart last Monday (10/20), it’s a slam-dunk to be #1 next week, leaving the only question, how high it can go.

CHESNEY’S SUN SHINES!

LaMontagne, Keane, Lucinda Bow in Top 10, AC/DC, HIgh School Musical 3 Up Next
Luck had nothing to do with it, as BNA/SBMG Nashville country star Kenny Chesney’s new album, Lucky Old Sun, debuted at #1 with 177k in sales.

This is the deluxe version of the disc, with the regular package hitting retail today (10/21).

That was more than enough to turn back two-time chart-topper T.I.’s Grand Hustle/Atlantic album Paper Trail, which logged another 138k.

There are two other newcomers to the Top 5: RCA/RMG New England cult singer/songwriter Ray LaMontagne, whose critically acclaimed Gossip in the Grain benefited from spectacular iTunes sales in bowing at #3, and Interscope U.K. pop-rock group Keane’s Perfect Symmetry, which debuts at #5, just behind WB rock icons Metallica, who slip a notch to #4.

Lost Highway roots-rock veteran Lucinda WilliamsLittle Honey is the other Top 10 debut at #9, with Arista/RMG’s Jennifer Hudson (#6), Atlantic’s Kid Rock (#7), Def Jam/IDJ’s Ne-Yo (#8) and Hear Music/Concord’s James Taylor Covers album (#10) rounding out the leader board.

Mercury Nashville’s Billy Currington, another top-flight act from Universal Nashville boss Luke Lewis, tops the list of chart newcomers at #12, along with Word’s gospel compilation Wow Hits 2009 (#34), Metal Blade hard rockers Unearth (#39), Warner Bros. Nashville’s Faith Hill (#42) and Sony Classical’s Yo-Yo Ma (#48).

Based on the strength of her smashing Saturday Night Live performance, Columbia’s Adele climbs back into the Top 50 at #49, while going to #1 at iTunes, followed by Interscope global hip-hop sensation M.I.A.’s Kala at #50.

Capitol’s Coldplay album is the week’s top double-digit gainer, moving #30-22, +11%. Mercury Nashville’s Sugarland (#19-16, +7%), Atlantic’s Jason Mraz (#27-21, +6%), Big Machine’s Taylor Swift (#34-30, +1%) and Capitol’s Now 28 (#44-40, +1%) are also in the black.

With AC/DC’s Columbia album Black Ice, hitting Wal-Mart on Monday (10/20), it’s a slam-dunk to be #1 next week. The only question is, how high it can go? Also on tap: Disney’s High School Musical 3.
