JACKSON TRIBUTE A NO-GO?
London Concerts Planned for Superstar’s 51 st Birthday Look Unlikely To Take Place as Scheduled

According to sources inside the Michael Jackson camp, the planned tribute concerts, which were scheduled to take place on what would have been The King of Pop’s 51st birthday on Aug. 29 at London’s O2 Arena, with a second date on Aug. 30, will reportedly be postponed indefinitely.

Jermaine, Randy, Tito and Jackie, the remaining four of the Jackson 5, were prepared to perform, though such high-profile guests such as Janet and Justin Timberlake hadreporteedly turned down the invite.

Other mentioned in connection with the show were Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey. Elton John, Lionel Richie and Usher, none of whom had agreed to appear.

Several broadcast TV networks had previously spurned the opportunity to televise yet another Jackson special, featuring footage from the rehearsals, including NBC, which was considering using the occasion to introduce Jay Leno’s prime-time debut next fall.

AEG’s Randy Phillips had continued to insist the shows would go on, saying “the world needs to see this production.”

The promotion company, still seeking to recoup its estimated $30 million in production costs, will now have to return to the drawing board.
