DOUG'S BIG NIGHT OUT

Morris Honored By City of Hope and a Who’s Who of Stars, Media Moguls
City of Hope raised nearly $10 million for cancer research when it celebrated the life and career of legendary record man Doug Morris during the annual Spirit of Life gathering last night in Santa Monica. The gala, which honored Morris for his outstanding contributions to the community and music industry, shattered fundraising records to make it one of the single largest one-night charity events in California state history.

It was a fitting celebration of Morris' incredibly successful music business career, which took him from Laurie Records and his own Big Tree label to running Atlantic Records, head of Warner's music holdings to chief of the world's largest record company in Universal Music Group.

Among those Morris-associated artists who performed for the honoree and a crowd of nearly 2,000 were Mariah Carey, Rihanna, Maroon 5, Stevie Nicks, Lionel Richie, Michael McDonald, Keyshia Cole, Robin Thicke, Lee Ann Womack, Luis Fonsi & David Bisbal, Duffy, Jamie Cullum, Erykah Badu and the Clique Girlz.

The event was packed with big names from the media, entertainment and technology industries, including Steve Jobs, David Geffen, Sumner Redstone, MySpace co-founders Chris DeWolfe and Tom Anderson, Activision Chairman/CEO Bobby Kotick, CBS President/CEO Les Moonves, AEG President Tim Leiweke, UMG President/COO Zach Horowitz, Motown founder Berry Gordy and Michael Tatelman of primary sponsor Dell. Also on hand were Jay-Z, the Jonas Brothers, Sheryl Crow, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, Josh Groban, Smokey Robinson, Lil Jon and Nelly.

Doug was introduced by his protege Jimmy Iovine with a warm remembrance of how they first worked together on an album by Nicks. Stevie got the evening underway by remembering her late friend Robin, whose son she adopted as her own after she passed away from leukemia, receiving treatment from the City of Hope that kept her alive long enough to give birth to the boy, now all grown up and brought to the stage by the singer.

“City of Hope is so deeply honored to have the support of a remarkable industry leader like Doug Morris,” said City of Hope President/CEO Dr. Michael A. Friedman. “His tireless dedication as an executive and mentor is also mirrored in his philanthropic commitment. Under his leadership and through the efforts of so many outstandingly talented stars, this successful industry campaign is testament to the generosity of the music and entertainment industry and their belief in City of Hope’s lifesaving cancer research, treatment and education programs.”

Here's a set list for the spectacular Doug Morris Motown Review, with Geffen Chairman Ron Fair conducting the band he helped assemble for the following artist performances:

The event ended with the Clique Girlz and the audience serenading Morris with a karaoke version of The Chiffons' "Sweet Talkin' Guy," the song he wrote.

At the close of the evening, everyone repaired to Jimmy's Place, Iovine's private club across the street from the Interscope offices in Santa Monica, where the celebration went into the wee hours of the morning.
