That was more than enough to defeat Blue Note’s Norah Jones, who falls to #2 in her second week with a still-formidable 224k in sales.
High School Musical alum Ashley Tisdale’s Warner Bros. bow, Headstrong, debuts at #5, while SBMG/CMG’s Jason Michael Carroll crashes the Top 10 at #8 with Waitin’ in the Country, thanks to his hit single, “Alyssa Lies,” the biggest hit about an abused child since Suzanne Vega’s “Luka.”
Top 10 holdovers include RCA/RMG’s Daughtry (#3), SRC/Universal Motown’s Akon (#4), Star Trak/Interscope’s Robin Thicke (#6), SBMG/CMG’s Grammy Nominees 2007 (#7), Atlantic rap siblings Pretty Ricky (#9) and RCA/RMG’s Katharine McPhee (#10), giving American Idol two at the head of the chart.
Other newcomers to the Top 50 include Vice/Atlantic U.K. phenoms Bloc Party (#19), Red Ink country queen Patti Griffin (#26) and Fueled by Ramen emo stalwarts Gym Class Heroes (#46).
Reprise’s Josh Groban (#42-20, +32%) leads the double-digit gainers, along with Robin Thicke (#6, +21%), Jive/ZLG’s Justin Timberlake (#18-11, +18%), Akon (+15%), Curb’s Rodney Atkins (#43-34, +16%), Capitol Nashville’s Keith Urban (#45-35, +15%), Arista/RMG Best New Artist Grammy winner Carrie Underwood (#23-17, +14%), Interscope’s Gwen Stefani (#29, +13%) and Big Machine’s Taylor Swift (#50-44, +13%). Capitol’s Lily Allen remains strong at #20, down just 1% from last week.
Next week, look for Grammy sales spikes to help Columbia Grammy winners Dixie Chicks to surge back into the mix, along with labelmates John Mayer, Tony Bennett and John Legend. Also expected to benefit from show exposure are Timberlake and Underwood, UMG’s Mary J. Blige and WMG’s Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gnarls Barkley and James Blunt.
Hitting retail and expected to debut in the Top 50 next week are Atlantic’s Gerald Levert and Lost Highway’s Lucinda Williams.
