SURPRISES ADD INTRIGUE TO THE
VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS

Upstarts Take Some of the Top Categories as Favorites Fall...but Not OK Go
Team USA wasn’t the only heavy favorite to suffer an upset in the last few hours. The musical equivalents of D-Wade and LeBron James were the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Shakira, each of whom went one for seven at Thursday night’s MTV Video Music Awards—Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie” winning a Moonman for choreography and the Peppers’ “Dani California” getting one for art direction. Sentimental favorite and five-time nominee Madonna fared even worse, getting completely shut out.

In an upset, Video of the Year went to rookie band Panic! at the Disco for "I Write Sins Not Tragedies," while another newcomer, James Blunt, took home Best Male Video for "Beautiful." Another big winner, OK Go, wasn’t even nominated but nonetheless won over the crowd at Radio City Music Hall by reproducing their treadmill choreography live onstage.
