LENNY: what is sxsw?
IVANA: a utopian society in austin, tex that makes people feel like the music business is still vital/an annual gathering of all my ex-boyfriends
LENNY: wow, all my exes live in texas
IVANA: i only have one ex there. the rest will be imported for the occasion
THE IVANA & LENNY SHOW:
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
Wherein Ivana Explains the Meaning of SXSW and A2IM to Lenny, Who Keeps the Car Running
LENNY: i think today's a good day to do a column, whaddyathink?
IVANA: that works
LENNY: i think we should talk about the new FCC ruling
IVANA: why don't you tell me about it
LENNY: well, originally Daniel Glass and Don Rose from A2IM went to congress to discuss ACCESS for indie labels to a radio system which was denying it
IVANA: what's A2IM stand for?
LENNY: i have no idea what it stands for
IVANA: it stands for the american association of independent music.
LENNY: during the process Don Rose was replaced by Peter Gordon, not Peter + Gordon, and the ruling happened yesterday. they wanted to open the system to small labels, artists and local bands
IVANA: so what is the ruling?
LENNY: the ruling, which has been overshadowed by the payola settlement and the guaranteed hours of play for indie bands (which feels like a scam of some sort), is that ACCESS will occur. there will be a letter released any day now in which the broadcasters can no longer refuse to talk to hired, compliance assured, reps of the indie labels
IVANA: wow, that means ME
LENNY: that is EXACTLY who it means, you who have Spoon-fed us the Interpol and Arcade Fire like an Arctic Monkey, can no longer be denied your quests by corporate rulings. now they can not take your calls for other reasons, like hatred
IVANA: or that they're not playing any currents
LENNY: currents? do people still play currents?
IVANA: somewhere in the 20-30% range, at best
LENNY: well, then i want one of those, and i want one that turns into a non-current so they can play it in yrs to come as well
IVANA: that is a very confusing statement. i have to finish this so i can go to amoeba and buy the new arcade fire because i've already gone through the 200 copies i had in my office
LENNY: it will debut in the top 3 next week, contender even for numero uno
IVANA: radio is beginning to pay attention. we have the "pure 12" as ted calls them on "keep the car running," and we're expanding beyond that. although it's naive in this climate to believe that radio "has to pay attention," since i'm not sure that's the case
LENNY: they don't have to pay attention to anyone
IVANA: exactly
LENNY: that's what great promotion people do, break thru the clutter and get people's attention
IVANA: i agree. universal motown is doing an amazing job with kaiser chiefs--they had a breakthru week.
LENNY: one of my favorite bands, i am so happy they are scoring this time
IVANA: the shins, which certainly isn't an obvious record for pomo, is top 15!!! and roadrunner is making huge inroads with madina lake, which was also chosen for "discover & download" on mtv. amy winehouse was added at krox, kdld and xm. can’t wait to see her at sxsw! sick puppies is breaking big. I just saw them the other night. plus joey scoleri is most added on plain white t's!
LENNY: and i like all of those as well, even the ones i haven't heard. pwts is a FORKING SMASH
IVANA: and did i mention that arcade fire is doing well?
LENNY: who?
IVANA: some band on an indie label. heard they're pretty good. wfnx had its highest trend in recent memory--1.6
LENNY: max.
IVANA: indeed. i'm looking forward to the new bravery single. the feedback from radio is incredible!
LENNY: yes, it should go boom, it is exceptionally good
IVANA: that will be fun. we could use a record like that
LENNY: yep, hits are good for everyone
IVANA: will you miss me when i'm at sxsw, seeing 400 bands/day
LENNY: what is sxsw?
IVANA: a utopian society in austin, tex that makes people feel like the music business is still vital/an annual gathering of all my ex-boyfriends
LENNY: wow, all my exes live in texas
IVANA: i only have one ex there. the rest will be imported for the occasion
LENNY: jumbo jet?
IVANA: fedex
LENNY: excellent, say goodnight, gracie
IVANA: i'll put all my fave austin shopping places on the website before the weekend. until then, goodnight, gracie
