MTV VMAS RESULT IN SALES, RADIO, NET SPIKES

Britney, Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, Rihanna, 50 Cent, Common, Alicia Keys Drive Increased Music Sales, Airplay

Say what you want about the show, but this year’s MTV VMAs, which saw a 20% rise in viewership, also fueled increased activity for many of the featured artists, including Justin Timberlake, Common, Nelly Furtado, Gym Class Heroes, Timbaland, Fall Out Boy, Chris Brown, Foo Fighters, 50 Cent and Rihanna.

The show resulted in huge spike in album sales, single/iTunes sales and radio airplay as well as heightened Rhapsody.com activity.

For instance, Alicia Keys’ performance of “No One,” increased its audience from 27 million the day before to 43 million, according to RCA Music Group’s Lou Robinson, who said: “The song was the most added at Rhythm radio, and the reason they gave was the VMAs and the audience’s reaction.”

Justin Timberlake, Futuresex/Lovesounds +14%

Rhapsody.com, the exclusive digital music service for MTV Networks, saw a 20% increase in unique visitors during the week of the VMAs. Artist page views were up, including Britney (124%), Justin Timberlake (83%), Chris Brown (59%), Fall Out Boy (57%) and Timbaland (21%).
