Brooks, Brown, Angels & Airwaves and Cassidy Bow in Top 10, While Rapper Secures #1

Jay-Z’s Roc-A-Fella/IDJ album American Gangster, inspired by the box office smash of the same name, climbs to the top of the world, ma, on this week’s HITS Top 50 sales chart, with a total of 433k.

The rap mogul is just one of five newcomers to the Top 10, followed by Garth BrooksPearl Records Ultimate Hits at #3 with 355k and Jive/ZLG terpsichorean Chris Brown’s Exclusive at #3, sporting 302k, with Suretone’s Angels & Airwaves at #8 and Full Surface/Ruff Ryders/J hip-hop star Cassidy at #10.

Last week’s chart-topping Eagles album, Long Road Out of Eden, although it drops to #2, has another healthy week at Wal-Mart with 357k, bringing their two-week total to more than one million.

Arista Nashville/RMG’s Carrie Underwood lands at #5, with Reprise’s Josh Groban #6 and Jive/ZLG’s Britney Spears #7.

Last week’s nationally televised, prime-time Country Music Awards was instrumental in boosting Big Machine’s ingénue Taylor Swift from #27-9, with an impressive 157% rise in sales.

Others experiencing the CMA effect include Island/Mercury Nashville’s Sugarland (#29-13, +119%), MCA Nashville’s Reba McEntire (#15-12, +48%) and BNA/SBMG Nashville’s Kenny Chesney (#40-34, +17%). Underwood also experiences just a 25% drop-off.

Double-digit increases are also registered by Groban (+65%), Disney’s High School Musical 2 (#11, +22%), Universal Republic’s Colbie Caillat (#17, +13%), Disney’s Hannah Montana 2 (#19, +19%), Geffen’s Keyshia Cole (#22, +16%), American Gramophone’s Mannheim Steamroller (#34-25, +37%) and Capitol’s J. Holiday (#36, +13%).

Columbia opera star Paul Potts re-enters the chart at #21 and is up a whopping 465%, thanks to an Oprah appearance.

The rest of the chart newcomers include Machete Music’s Wisin Y Yandel (#15), Equity Music Group’s Little Big Town (#26), Def Jam/IDJ’s American Gangster soundtrack (#37) and Mailboat’s Jimmy Buffet live album (#43).
