WHEELS & DEALS: BRUIN FOOTBALL, B-BALL BUSTIN’ OUT

The Annual Crosstown Rivalry Takes Rodel’s Mind Off the Woes of Weasel Land for a Week
By Rodel Delfin

Bruin football, b-ball bustin’ out—try saying that five times fast. We can’t help but relish in our alma mater’s current standings with their sports organizations this week. First, the UCLA football team has a surprising shot at playing in the Rose Bowl this season. A win against cross-town rival USC this Saturday (12/1), along with an Arizona victory over Arizona State, puts the Westwood Bruins in the Tournament of Roses on Jan. 1. Let’s not forget that they won against the #2 ranked Trojans last year, thus knocking them out of the 2006 BCS National Championship game. Meanwhile, the Ben Howland-led Bruin basketball team is ranked #1 in the nation in the latest coaches’ poll and is looking really sharp. March Madness is poised to be great next year… BLIND ITEM TIDBITS: Insiders share that there’s a major power struggle going on between several high-level executives at the top at one East Coast-based label. We’re told that it’s starting to get ugly, and even the foot soldiers within the ranks are starting to take sides… Meanwhile, we hear offers are starting to come in on The Zac Brown Band. We can probably expect this one to close before the end of the year… Manager David Surnow joins the crew at Pulse Recordings. Surnow’s clients include producer Matt Mahaffey, The Dan Band, The Outline and Tim Harkins, among others… For the publishers out there who slept on this one, the ink is dry on Revelation Theory’s pub deal with EMI Music Publishing. EMI pub player Dan McCarroll sealed the deal, while barrister Howard Sadowsky mediated the weasel pub derby… A couple of things to keep an eye on before they get really nutty: Soulful, electro funk guy Sam Sparro now has some serious heat from across the pond, and singer/songwriter Meiko has been getting a lot of mainstream media attention lately. We’ve been singing her praises for a while now, so don’t be late… THE LAST DIRGE: Our recent story on music retail noted some interesting metrics from Hastings Entertainment’s financial postings. Compared to the same period last year, sales of videogames jumped a sizable 34.1%, consumer electronics elevated 30.8% and even movie sales improved 7.6%. Meanwhile, music sales dropped 14.8%, which is pretty much on par with overall industry figures on this year’s CD sales decline. With those numbers in mind, here’s something to ponder at this stage of the game: Instead of focusing on “new artist 360 deals” and the continuing campaign of suing music consumers for illegal downloading, why hasn’t our industry as a whole placed more importance on initiatives like monetizing P2P models, lobbying congress for further copyright and master rights protection and cutting deals with Internet service providers, all of whom are profiting from our consumers who trade music files?
