AVRIL'S DAMN IS STILL BURSTING

Lavigne #1 for Second Week, Joe Debuts #2, Arctic Monkeys #7
It may be May, but Avril is still The Best Damn Thing happening at the top of the HITS chart.

The third album from Arista’s one-time skate-punk ingénue Lavigne remains at #1 for the second week in a row, with 116k in sales for a two-week total of more than 405k, which, if not exactly a shower, is still not bad for this so-far desultory year.

That was more than enough to beat back the week’s top debut, Jive/ZLG R&B star Joe, whose Ain’t Nothin’ Like Me album bows at #2, with just this side of 100k in sales.

The other Top 10 newcomer, Domino/WB’s Arctic Monkeys, fresh from selling a quarter of a million their first week out in the U.K., score an impressive 45k, good enough for a #7 debut.

EMI’s Now 24 leads the holdovers at #3, followed by Nothing/Interscope’s Nine Inch Nails (#4), RCA/RMG’s Daughtry (#5) and SRC/Universal Motown’s Akon (#6), as well as three country artists in Arista/RMG’s Carrie Underwood (#8), Curb’s Tim McGraw (#9) and Sony BMG Nashville’s Martina McBride (#10).

Neil Sedaka’s Razor & Tie Definitive Collection debuts at #21, with Decca’s Donny Osmond Love Songs of the ’70s at #30

Joss Stone, thanks to a performance on Dancing with the Stars, moves her Virgin album #31-16, with a 45% rise, leading the pack of upward movers, which also includes Universal Republic’s Amy Winehouse (#15-11, +3%), Big Machine’s Taylor Swift (#22, +5%), Lyric Street’s Rascal Flatts (#23, +11%), Walt Disney RecordsHannah Montana (#33-27, +7%) and Blue Note’s Norah Jones (#38-34, +3%)—still the #1 album of the year so far.

Next week, Island Def Jam’s Ne-Yo leads the newcomers, with Reprise’s Michael Buble, Epic’s Tori Amos and Record Collection/WB’s Spider-Man 3 soundtrack. Also on tap: SBMG Nashville’s Miranda Lambert, Hollywood’s Corbin Bleu and WB Nashville’s Blake Shelton.
