What Do Bands and Weasels Actually Talk About at These So-called “Meetings,” Anyway?
By Rodel Delfin

As the A&R community descends on the Big Apple for this year’s installment of the CMJ Music Marathon, here are some tidbits to use before you snack on those $1 hot dogs at your favorite N.Y. street vendor. Label reps were out in full force at Black Market’s L.A. shows last week at the Viper Room and Cinespace. As you may recall, the Las Vegas band won the top prize for their standout perf at this year’s Amplify Music Conference in Sin City just last August. A&R reps who attended the conference got the jump-start on the band, which lends additional cred to the confab in its efforts to spotlight up-and-coming unsigned talent. We’ll keep you posted as label meetings continue for the band… Revelation Theory played the Wiltern in L.A. last Saturday (10/28) as they continue to hold down the support slot on the Evanescence tour. We hear label meetings are continuing this week in L.A. And Amy Lee and crew have decided to bring the band with them for their European tour for the next three weeks. So can we expect the band to be taken off the market soon?… The Brian Schall-repped Midnight Hour is finalizing a deal with Interscope… Word on the street is that Epitaph band Motion City Soundtrack has majors setting up meetings with the group regarding a possible new label home as their current deal comes to a close. The band is reportedly in the studio working on their next album. Stay tuned… Indie/emo stalwart Straylight Run has been meeting with label folks after completing their album obligations to Victory Records. Expect A&R types to be at their CMJ show at the Knitting Factory Saturday night (11/4). And they are also playing the Syndicate’s CMJ party. In other news, Victory has inked Chicago’s 1997, described by the label’s Tony Brummel as "a natural fit to our roster in our quest to be the best rock record label on the planet. Like so many of our other great artists, 1997 have that special, indescribable ’chill’ that can only be felt and not conveyed in words.” To see what he’s talking about, click here... We’ll give you the post-CMJ report next week… PROUD PAPA: Lastly, congrats to EMI Music Publishing’s Matt Messer and wife Jennifer on the recent birth of their beautiful baby girl, Maggie Hayes, who weighed in at 7 lbs. 13 oz. and was rocking out to classic Blink-182 tracks when she got home… BUZZIN’: Georgia, Republic of Loose and Peter Bjorn & John… Hit me up: [email protected].
