ONCE AND FOR ALL

The Little Film That Could Takes the Oscars by Storm
Two years ago, a little Irish movie made for $100k made the festival circuit.

Now, Once is an Oscar winner, as Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova’s “Falling Slowly” took home the prize as Best Original Song at last night’s Academy Awards, as well as giving a show-stopping performance.

Congrats to all those at Canvasback, Columbia Records, Sony Music Soundtrax and RED, including Glen Brunman, who discovered the film and music after several festival showings, Steve Ralbovsky for putting it on Canvasback, Columbia's Mark DiDia for sticking with it, along with true believers like RED promo domo Danny Buch, VH1's Rick Krim and Triple A radio, which resulted in a sweet victory.

At Amazon.com, the soundtrack is #1, the deluxe edition (in a 50k limited edition) #9 and the Swell Season album is #19, while it is now #1 at iTunes. The movie has also climbed into the Top 10 at #9 on the DVD side at Amazon, with its highest prior position #18. The track is now also heating up at Hot A/C radio.

The pair will appear on Good Morning America on Thursday, will be featured in an upcoming CBS Sunday Morning segment and are in negotiations for a Saturday Night Live appearance.

In his acceptance speech, Glen Hansard noted how improbable the honor would have seemed just two years ago, when the indie film was shot for “a hundred grand.” His speech ended with the words, “Make art! Make art!” After Hansard left the stage, host Jon Stewart deadpanned, “Those guys are so arrogant.” Then, after the commercial break, Stewart brought back Marketa Iglova, who got cut off before her acceptance speech, as she added Obama-style, “Fair play to those who dare to dream.” Right after observing Glen and Marketa backstage with their Oscars, Stewart says the pair had their awards kiss each other. “But they’re guys,” said one. “Hey, it’s Hollywood,” answered the other.

We’ve also learned Hansard and producer T Bone Burnett decided to work together during lunch last week on what will turn out to be either a Frames or Hansard album, later this year.
