ONE-DAY SALES: POST-HOLIDAY TRAFFIC

Shakira, Chris Brown, Dave Matthews Will Be Highest Debuts, but Many Will Vie for #1
According to early reports from national accounts, this week’s highest chart debuts will come from Shakira’s Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 (Epic) and Chris Brown’s self-titled album (Jive). Each is expected to sell around 150k for the week.

That might be enough for one of them to debut at #1, but then again, it might not. This week’s #1, System of a Down’s Hypnotize (American/Columbia) is also expected to move about 150k in this, its second week of release. Already, it’s a three-way battle.

The major accounts flexed their discounting muscle in a major way over the holiday weekend, and the likes of Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Target and Circuit City were rewarded with teeming hordes of holiday shoppers in their stores. And clearly, many of them bought records.

But the deep Turkey-Day discounts are over, and while this week’s higher pricing will likely serve to deflate such poofed-up titles as Kenny Chesney’s The Road and the Radio (BNA), Now 20 (UTV) and the Get Rich or Die Tryin’ soundtrack (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope), they are each still expected to be in the running for #1—as is Madonna’s Confessions on a Dancefloor (Warner Bros.), which did just under 215k this week.

Clearly, there’s just no telling at this point who will come out on top, so let’s just move on.

Also debuting on next week’s chart will be INXS, whose post-Rock Star album, Switch (Epic) has come on stronger than expected and is likely to finish the week at around 80k, and the Dave Matthews Band’s live Weekend on the Rocks (RCA), which is expected to move around 50k.

OK, then, here are the pertinent numbers regarding the business we all know and love: The market was up 29.9% last week on 3.9 million units, but down 12.7% from the same week last year. That puts the industry year to date down 9.9%. Ho, ho, ho.
