WHEELS & DEALS: NINE BLACK ALPS, RAY LAMONTAGNE, THE VACATION, WORLD LEADER PRETEND IN THE CROSSHAIRS

All-American Rejects Segue to Interscope, Andreone Lands at Columbia

A SUMMIT ACROSS THE POND: Despite all the hi-tech home recording equipment being used out there, sometimes the good ol’ eight-track can still do the trick. It certainly worked for U.K. act Nine Black Alps, who recently signed with Nick Gatfield at Universal/Island U.K., while A&R hitter Luke Wood inks the group to Interscope stateside. Tracks from the Manchester-based ensemble prompted numerous U.K. label reps to descend on their shows in the past months—even though the band had played fewer than 10 gigs. Expect to hear more from these Brits in the near future. Will this signing pave the way for more artists emerging out of a new Manchester scene? Enterprising playas might want to look into it... Also, on the Interscope front, the All-American Rejects along with A&R hitter Jeff Sosnow have transitioned to the label from DreamWorks… After months of label jockeying and a fierce management and agent derby, word has it that the Chrysalis Music-developed/Michael McDonald-managed Ray LaMontagne has inked with RCA Records for the world, excluding Europe. With a team finally in place, expect to see more of the Maine mountain man in the months to come. Meanwhile, buzzers are buzzing about the Kenny MacPherson-led Chrysalis Music, which has placed itself in the spotlight as a hot independent publishing/artist-development company. Keep an eye out for the next Chrysalis-developed act, The Vacation, who recently completed a record with producer Tony Hoffer... Reps from Capitol, Island Def Jam, Epic, EMI Music and Interscope, among others, were in New Orleans last week checking out the Reid Hunter-repped World Leader Pretend. Who’s in?... In the midst of the Atlantic-Elektra artist roster consolidation, rumor has it that some of the Adult acts may shift over to the Warner-distributed Nonesuch label—home to k.d. lang, David Byrne, Emmylou Harris and, of course, Wilco—and will be worked through Warner Bros. Just when you thought you were out, they pull you back in... Meanwhile, what unsigned act is getting played on 25 Hot AC stations and garnering requests in several markets? Is your research department on this one?... Finally, former Warner/Chappell chap David Andreone moves to the dark side, emerging as VP of A&R at Columbia Records. The former pub hitter, who had signed deals with Michelle Branch, Disturbed and Hoobastank, among others, will be based in Los Angeles and report to Columbia West Coast GM Tim Devine. Nice job, David. We’ll soon be hitting you up for some Mariah Carey box sets to sell on ebay… BUZZIN’: To My Surprise and The Bravery… Hit me up: [email protected]
